Description

The triangulation technique of anastomosing blood vessels was such a valuable contribution to vascular surgery that Alexis Carrel was awarded the 1912 Nobel Prize for physiology or medicine 'in recognition of his work on vascular suture and the transplantation of blood vessels and organs' (Carrel 1912). His research branched into other specialities and, whilst blood vessel transplantation and organ transplantation appeared to be a natural progression, he also contributed to important advances in tissue viability and aging cells. Despite his impressive work in his professional capacity he often found himself at the centre of controversy. Not all agreed with his outspokenness or the controversial views expressed in his book Man the Unknown (Carrel 1938). His opinions often clouded the public's view of him and his work, and his colleagues considered his private life and some of his working methods unconventional. However, his work on the anastomosis and transplantation of blood vessels was innovative and pioneered a way forward for surgery today.
